Helen Conway

I come from a background of advocacy and freelance journalism, and so maybe it is unsuprsing that many of my art quilts tell stories of people and place and/or focus on issues of social justice such as the lasting effects of apartheid. Newer work focuses on fragmented graffiti marks and the idea of language  difficulties  and cultural mis-understandings associated with immigration.I am interested in boundaries (both physical boundaries between countries and cultural boundaries between people) and how the movement across those boundaries results in cultural diversity. Often my work is about the Place Between, either physical areas of temporary housing or a more conceptual area of conflict, the place where accommodation, resolution and understanding must be found.
